A Q&A with Akris Designer Albert Kriemler

Did you design the Fall collection with anyone or any inspiration in mind?
It was a view from the woods to a still lake within the winter forest — this was the inspiration for fabrics and color. Nature is a constant inspiration for me.

Selecting Daphne Guinness to be the face of Akris the past two seasons was an unexpected choice. What drew you to her?
Daphne is a beautiful and intriguing woman — a fashion icon in her own right. I’ve seen her photographed by Steven [Klein] before, and she emanates a sense of mystery and aristocracy. There is more to the picture than meets the eye.

Where do you see Akris 10 years from now?
Hopefully many more accessories and handbags made out of horsehair, or with touches of this wonderful and unique material. My favorite piece of the collection is the drawstring sleeve trench coat with horsehair patch pockets.

Favorite architect and architecture?
Architecture and contemporary art are two fields where I spend my precious free time. Last time I was in Dallas I visited, among others, Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Museum and Tadao Ando’s Fort Worth Modern. This time I cannot wait to see the Nasher Sculpture Center and other new architecture which has recently been built in Dallas. The most important architect for my work is Adolf Loos. He was one of the first to embrace minimalism after the era of Art Nouveau. Loos was critical of every type of decoration that had no function. His principle was ‘form follows function and function is always beautiful.’

The Ten Best Dressed Women of Dallas

The Crystal Charity Ball’s Ten Best Dressed nominees, chosen by the Crystal Charity Ball membership, view home as a centripetal part of their lives. It’s fitting we chose a dwelling — a modern masterpiece crafted by architect Roland Roessner circa 1967, with a thoughtful renovation by Brown Architects in 2008 — for the location of our annual shoot. Not only did the Ten Best Dressed, Hall of Fame Honoree, Ball Chair and Luncheon Chair glow in the many architectural nooks of 3601 Euclid Avenue, but also, as you can see from the portraits, the house took on a shine of its own. Owned by Terrasse Properties, 3601 Euclid Avenue is listed for $5,799,000 through Briggs-Freeman Real Estate Brokerage, briggs-freeman.com.
