River Oaks Donuts

Call it a throwback to a comforting morning sweet that we frankly never abandoned: Donuts are a big deal once again, and a mainstay of moms who pick up dozens for baseball and lacrosse practice, church and school functions. First, Mary Lee Donuts left San Felipe Street, then Shipley’s left West U. What’s a River Oaks carpool mom to do? Mindy Hildebrand, wife of billionaire Jeff Hildebrand and mom to two teenage boys, took matters into her capable hands. She called up Mr. Shipley who, at the time, only offered franchises outside of Houston (his mistake), so she bought a well-located shopping center on Westheimer at Edloe, created her own donut haven and named it River Oaks Donuts. A precious outpost designed by blue-blood architects Curtis & Windham, with drive-through and counter service, ROD offers up handmade donuts from its own recipes, brewed coffee from Houston’s Java Pura Coffee Roasters and Prasek’s kolaches. Mindy’s faves are blueberry cake donuts, raised and glazed chocolate with cream filling and apple fritters, and the donut holes are filled with a variety of flavors — try the cappuccino cream. During the first few days of business in mid-June, BMW X5s, Range Rovers, Tahoes and Suburbans purred in long lines around the block — ordering, we suspect, dozens of the River Oaks-green-iced donuts with pink sprinkles and dozens glazed in the colors of nearby St. John’s, River Oaks Baptist and Pooh Corner. River Oaks Donuts will soon offer house charge accounts, just like we loved at JMH, Jamail’s and Avalon Diner. Open daily, 6 am to 3 pm. 3601 Westheimer Road, 713.961.9458.
