At the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, it’s a scintillating doubleheader. Leading off is “Faking It,” a look at manipulated photography before Photoshop (through August 25). Varying from the political (portraits of Stalin and Lenin in air-brushed splendor, often with outre comrades removed from the frame) to the spiritual, surreal, commercial or zany (a gargantuan ear of corn as big as a flatbed truck, a woman perched in a champagne cocktail), it’s an extraordinary survey of 150 years of photography that includes Yves Klein’s famous Leap into the Void (1960). Then gaze upon the often surprising riches of The Brillembourg Capriles Collection of Latin American Art, served up for the first time ever. Astute and committed collector Tanya Brillembourg — who divides her time between Caracas and Madrid and is also an honorary trustee of the MFAH — has placed her trove on long-term loan to the museum, where it has been conserved and studied for several years. This show illuminates the vast, underknown field of Latin American modernism. Watch for a handsome still life by a fabled Mexican muralist (guess who), alongside early proto-Pop Boteros, as well as a cache of paintings by Roberto Matta, Wilfredo Lam, Joaquín Torres-García and more. Kudos to all-powerful curator Mari Carmen Ramírez for coaxing this most important collection to Houston. Is it destined for building three of the MFAH’s expansion? … Art League Houston’s new Montrose Boulevard programming debuts with Patrick Renner’s Funnel Tunnel (expected to unveil Saturday, August 10). And listen for high notes by new-media opera star Lisa E. Harris, whose previous turns have included Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center.
