In Her Clutches

Charlotte Max Handbags

A vision of her grandmother dancing while holding a Lucite handbag is forever etched in the memory of Michelle Lockhart. Thus, the Dallasite set out to design a collection of vintage-inspired clutches bearing the name Charlotte Max, after their inspiration. “I have been obsessed with 1950s Lucite handbags for a decade,” Lockhart says. “They are unique and beautiful but difficult to find in mint condition.” So she began recreating some of her favorites. The vintage-inspired Maria (a nod to her spunky sister-in-law) is available in seven striking colors — think holographic midnight blue and pearly white — and comes with a semiprecious stone or brooch clasp; tucked inside is a tiny turtle representing longevity and beauty. Lockhart also sources and sells vintage bags, all perfectly preserved. “Finding them is like a needle in a haystack!,” she says.
