If you’ve ever attended The Phantom of the Opera, you’ve
probably seen the original direction (Harold Prince), the original costumes
(Maria Björnson) and the original choreography (Gillian Lynne). You’ve seen the
chandelier fall, the candles rise and the gondola drift across that “vast
glassy lake” of our shared imagination. But come spring … Who knows? Fresh
interpretations will abound, as R&H Theatricals is now accepting
applications from U.S. and Canadian high schools and colleges brave enough to
take on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s vocally challenging masterwork. Performances
could begin as soon as September 1.
Talk about one serious high school musical … Texas has
already seen one such production: As part of a pilot program between R&H
and Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, Carroll Senior High School in
Westlake tackled the show in late 2007.
There’s no word yet on whether any local schools are
applying for the rights. If yours has thrown your hat (or rather, your mask)
into the ring, let us know. We’d love to follow your progress and
promote the show here at papercitymag.com.
