The hallowed, historic walls of La Colombe d’Or’s 18th-century-era ballroom set up a strange paradox for the Disaster Ball. In lieu of 1700s grandees in powdered wigs, a Michael Jackson-styled performer joined legions of leading members of the Texas art scene, attired in scandalous apparel of questionable taste. In other words, this fabulous fun-raiser for Glasstire (GT) and Fresh Arts Coalition (FAC) was one of the best art happenings I’ve ever attended! Winning our vote for most memorable costumery: Damien “dotted” Hirst duo Pepper Paratore and Michael Landrum; one of the co-chairs, Ceron, with date Todd Fiscus, in from Dallas, as provocative campaign-buttoned candidates; and the cringe-worthy yet beautiful duo of GT’s Rainey Knudson and FAC’s Marita Fairbanks in racy showgirl numbers covered with (thank goodness they were plastic) roaches, wardrobes cleverly concocted by Kasi Kubiak, who herself donned a hurricane cancan costume.
