Dallas Arboretum Welcomes Delbert the Dragon

BY Rachel Lefferts // 07.19.16

On Saturday, July 23, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden celebrates the arrival of its newest guest: a six-and-a-half-foot tall, 615-pound dragon. Created by sculptor Gary Lee Price, the bronze statue, dubbed Delbert the Dragon, represents an effort to enliven the vivid imaginations of children and to encourage literacy and creativity among young and old alike.

The dragon swoops in just months after the artist’s statues of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, William Shakespeare, Albert Einstein, Claude Monet, and the Wright Brothers. A continuation of the arboretum’s current focus on artistry in nature, Delbert personifies the literary arts and will be surrounded by four other Price statues featuring children sitting on stacks of books.

Authors Lois Melbourne, Carmen Oliver, Leslie Widener, Nancy Churnin, Emma Virjan, and Bebra Bayne will kick off Delbert’s arrival with story times on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24, in the arboretum’s Pecan Grove, where Delbert will remain until Sunday, November 27.
