Philip Johnson described his museum design as that of a “marshmallow carved.” The grand opening, in October 1972, was attended by art-world dignitaries, including Dominique de Menil and Time art critic Robert Hughes. Exhibition headliners Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns attended the festivities; Frank Stella, the third featured artist, could not be there.
