Houston’s Best Music Festival Lineup Ever — Day for Night Brings No-They-Didn’t Star Power: Where the Stars Party

BY // 09.21.17

To say the lineup for the third frame of Day For Night, Houston’s premier music and arts festival, is stacked, is an understatement. This year’s lineup is the strongest festival lineup I’ve seen hit Houston, and one of the best I’ve seen, period. The amount of artists and the breadth of music Day For Night covers is unmatched.

The big, boldface headliners are Nine Inch Nails, Thom Yorke, St. Vincent, Tyler the Creator, Solange, Justice, and James Blake. And that’s just the beginning. Look elsewhere and surprises and “they got them?!” reactions emerge. There’s Jamie xx, who is sure to bring the chic, refined dance party. You’ll also see: legendary Texas alt-rockers The Jesus Lizard; revered musician and artist Laurie Anderson; indie queen and one of my favorite artists, Sky Ferreira, hopefully in town to play new music (2013’s Night Time, My Time, feels like ages ago).

Also on the bill are post-rock heroes Godspeed You! Black Emperor; “Bodak Yellow” superstar Cardi B; cult Oakland rapper (and the infamous source of the Kevin Durant Curse, which became the James Harden curse, and now threatens to be the Lonzo Ball Curse) Lil B; the sensual indie-rock of Perfume Genius; the talented “Tomboy” emcee Princess Nokia; Gary, Indiana’s footwork maven Jlin; avant-rap weirdoes Shabazz Palaces; drone and techno artists Tim Hecker and Andy Stott; and my favorite Houston musician, B L A C K I E.

Keeping a tradition, the festival has invited the reclusive ambient genius Gas, the stage name of Wolfgang Voigt, to perform his first show in the United States in eight years, fresh off his first album in 17 years. The inaugural 2015 installment of Day For Night welcomed New Order for their first Texas performance since the 1980s, and last year’s DFN boasted Aphex Twin’s first stateside show this decade.

The frenzy doesn’t stop there, however. The Festival’s Friday night will bring a summit curated by Saint Heron, aka Solange’s record label, starring Montreal-based house king Kaytranada and the prodigiously gifted rapper Earl Sweatshirt. Alongside the musical showcase will be politically charged appearances from the aforementioned Laurie Anderson, the recently freed Chelsea Manning, Nadya Tolokonnikova from persecuted Russian punk band Pussy Riot, and L.A.-based visual artist Lauren McCarthy.

For the second year in a row, Day For Night will takeover Post HTX, the former Barbara Jordan Post Office, on the edge of downtown at 401 Franklin. Providing a unique, up-close look of the skyline, the sprawling 1.5 million square-foot campus, featuring both outdoor and indoor stages and installations, is the perfect place for a multi-disciplinary festival. Per usual, as well, Day for Night includes immersive installations from artists such as Ryoji Ikeda, Matthew Schreiber, and Felicie D’Estienne D’Orves.

A portion of the festival’s proceeds have already been earmarked for the Greater Houston Community Foundation, in an effort to aid Houston and the surrounding coastal areas profoundly affected by Hurricane Harvey. The festival is slated for Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17, with Friday’s summit a separate ticketed event.
