Houston’s Best Fourth of July Weekend Events: No Fireworks Needed — Music and Food Rule

BY // 06.29.17

Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series.

The First Cut is the Deepest
One of my favorite local bands, Deep Cuts (for fans of: Smith Westerns, Girls, Ariel Pink, Whitney, etc.), are embarking on a northeastern tour including a stop in New York City to shoot a video. Their kickoff begins Thursday at White Oak Music Hall, with doors at 8 pm and support from other locals Roky Moon and Bolt and Young Girls. Tickets are just $10.

Love to Love Ya
Fort Worth chef Tim Love will be hosting an exclusive Fourth of July weekend pop-up at the newly renovated Levy Park in the Upper Kirby District. Love — chef/owner of Woodshed Smokehouse who will open a full restaurant at the park in 2018 — brings American, Mexican, and Asian-inspired cuisine to the holiday weekend featuring crispy brussels sprouts, Chile parmesan chips, pulled pork, brisket, bulgogi tacos, banh mi tacos, and much more.

The event runs Friday through Sunday, with the hours 5 pm to 9 pm Friday, 10 am to 9 pm, Saturday and 10 am to 5 pm Sunday. Admission is free, but the food costs money.

Everybody Knows That Bounce and Turn
The monthly hip-hop party Bounce & Turn returns to downtown this Friday at Main street hideout Lilly & Bloom. One of Houston’s most underrated rappers Dante Higgins headlines the free show with support from DJ Havin’ Thangs and DJ Big Heavy Kenny. Friday from 10 pm to 2 am.

Seein’ Red
Red Alert: Rhyme Time Extravaganza is a unique mix of hip-hop, dance music, and live poetry master-minded by PR maven Dutch Small. You *must* wear red to enter the free event with free food and free booze (while it lasts), and this is a strictly 21-and-up affair.

Confirmed rappers include: Devin the Dude, ESG, Killa Kyleon, Doughbeezy, and Fat Tony (among many others). DJs include Charles David, Josiah Gabriel, Baby Roo, and Dayta, who will keep the party going until 2 am.

This is Jazz
The latest installment of The Houston Jazz Spotlight Live! at Mongoose versus Cobra takes places Monday, July 3 from 7 pm to 10 pm. As always the show is a free eclectic mix of jazz, poetry, and live performances, hosted by the inimitable Tierney Malone. This month’s performance is dubbed “Afro Latin Jazz Extravaganza” and is co-hosted by Juan Flores. The show go through a tour of the Afro Latino music of Cuba and Brazil. Grammy-nominated educator Jose Diaz (founder of the Diaz Institute) will be a featured guest and once again Da Gumbo Brothers are on hand, this time remixing Latin jazz classics.

As always the shows are being recorded for later broadcasts on Houston Jazz Spotlight on 90.1 FM and for a podcast hosted by Malone launching in August 2017.

Also: the American League East first place New York Yankees come to town for a matchup against the American League West-leading Houston Astros this weekend. This will surely be an epic face-off between two of the most high-octane offenses in all of baseball. The Fourth of July weekend showdown starts Friday night at Minute Maid Park. And there are fireworks after Friday’s game.
