Houston’s New Burger Joint Brings Gourmet Dogs, Great Music and True Late-Night Eats to Montrose

BY // 11.06.15

What do you get when you combine mouthwatering burgers, massive hot dogs and more than 40 varieties of beer in a hip, Montrose location? The Burger Joint  from partners Shawn Bermudez (owner of Royal Oak, Stone’s Throw and Boondock’s) and chef Matthew Pak (Koagie Hots, Golden Grill).

The 150-seat restaurant, which officially opened on Wednesday, November 4, at 2703 Montrose Blvd. (previously the Little Bigs location), specializes in America’s favorite food groups — burgers, fries, hot dogs, beer and milkshakes.

The Burger Joint’s food truck is already known for dishing out a variety of burgers, but the new brick-and-mortar location offers an expanded menu, starting with the main attraction — burgers. The new menu showcases 10 burger options (as opposed to the food truck’s eight), including a classic burger made with 100 percent Angus beef (served with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and mayo) and other riffs, including the kimchi burger (Korean BBQ-style Angus beef, lettuce, onions, caramelized kimchi, fried egg, cheddar and garlic mayo), the Mexi burger (Angus beef, lettuce, grilled ham, avocado, queso fresco, jalapeños and chipotle mayo) and the Opa! (lamb, lettuce, tomato, pickled onions, feta cheese, cucumber and tzatziki sauce).

Burger Joint Fries
Hand-cut fries are one of 10 sides at The Burger Joint. Try them with one of the 10 dipping sauces.

Then there are the hot dogs, which are 100 percent beef, split and grilled. Of course, there’s a classic option and one topped with chili queso, but the real standout is the Big Frank — a footlong dog topped with your choice of pulled pork or chopped brisket, BBQ sauce and slaw (the brisket topping does not disappoint).

But the menu is more than burgers and dogs. The Burger Joint showcases its version of a salad with bowls, which are almost like breadless sandwiches. There’s the cheeseburger bowl, made with Angus beef, cheddar, romaine, tomato, onions, french fries and honey dijon dressing; the fiesta bowl, which combines grilled chicken, romaine, avocado, jalapeños, roasted corn, tortilla crisps, queso fresco and avocado and lime dressing; and the classic Caesar, made with grilled chicken, romaine, pickled onions, parmesan, croutons and Caesar dressing. Chicken, pulled pork and chopped beef sandwiches are also available.

The Burger Joint’s easygoing approach also extends to the redesigned space. Guests are greeted with whimsical art, including a screen print toting the words “I like big buns and I cannot lie.” A large, dog-friendly patio serves as the main seating area, and TVs line the entire outdoor space, making it a great location to relax or watch a game with friends. (In addition, Bermudez has curated one of the best playlists I’ve heard at a restaurant in Houston. We’re talking Michael Jackson meets Journey and N.W.A.)
