Natural disasters are deemed disasters for a reason. They wreak havoc and permanently alter lives. But sometimes the worst tragedies have a way of bringing out the best in a community, a fact that’s become increasingly evident through the unfolding catastrophe of Hurricane Harvey, the historic storm that has ravaged Houston and the Texas coast.
Harvey’s landfall has already been deemed historic. Dumping nine trillion gallons of rain, the storm — which hit the Texas coast as a Category 4 hurricane — has turned into the wettest tropical event in United States history.
That ominous superlative has resulted in more than 3,500 rescues from life-threatening flooding throughout the city of Houston, an operation which has not only highlighted Houstonians’ magnanimous spirit, but also the charitable soul of those across the country.
In fact, many states — including the New York Fire Department, the Utah Search and Rescue Task Force, and more — have already deployed extra manpower to Houston.
As heroic first-responders are conducting rescue missions around-the-clock, regular civilians have also stepped in providing boats and trucks; conducting impromptu rescues; and delivering aid to those in need.
It’s a heartwarming scene in the midst of an otherwise devastating situation.
