Kendrick Lamar and Chris Paul Team Up to Make this a Houston Weekend to Party: The Guru’s Sure-Fire Picks

BY // 07.14.17

Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series.

I Can Hit the Mall and Ball Like…
To celebrate the recent trade of all-star point guard Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets, the team is hosting CP3 Day at Toyota Center, a rally that’s free and open to the public, beginning at 1:30 pm Friday. Fans can watch Paul’s inaugural press conference and the team’s formal introduction of CP3 to Houston on Toyota Center’s giant scoreboard.

There will be a chance to win prizes, grab $1 nachos and hot dogs, and be the first to buy official Rockets CP3 merch. Even parking will be free. The event ends with Chris Paul’s first introduction to the fans.

Who knows – maybe CP3 will also have fellow banana boat member Carmelo Anthony with him by Friday afternoon (OK, maybe not).

The Demon City
Elysia Crampton is one of the most exciting artists making electronic music today. Born in Bolivia, Crampton is a Latinx artist who creates noisy, avant-garde compositions that bang and rattle like rap songs, with a subtle ear for sounds and textures befitting the tumultuous politics underscoring her music. Think Arca, Fatima Al-Qadiri, Dean Blunt, or even Houston’s B L A C K I E, who is appropriately opening the show for Crampton on Friday, July 14 at Walters.

Doors open at 9 pm and tickets range from $10 to $15. Beforehand, Crampton will be at Paraspace Books for a lecture titled “Feeling Abolition Through Nonlinear Timescales,” which kicks off promptly at 6 pm.

Just Bought a Cuban Dipped it in a Fountain
At just 21, A Boogie wit da Hoodie brims with promise. The young prospect was recently named an XXL Freshman and has millions of streams across the internet, but mainstream radio play has mostly eluded him thus far. The Bronx-born rapper mixes straightforward, introspective lyrics with frequent lapses into singing, a genuine artistic evolution, and not just riding the Drake-wave trying to tastelessly mix the two (his hook on Kodak Black‘s “Reminiscing” is one of the prettiest musical moments of 2017).

Friday at Warehouse Live; doors open at 8 pm. Pre-sale tickets are sold out, but a limited amount will be released the night of the show for $32.

An Octopus’ Garden in the Shade
Austin’s Ringo Deathstarr are a contemporary shoegaze band deserving of the moniker — they deftly blend wall-of-sound noise with rock-influenced songwriting, and have been a quiet favorite of mine for years. RIYL: Tamaryn, My Bloody Valentine, even Smashing Pumpkins.

Celebrating the East End Satellite Bar‘s move to full bar hours, Friday’s show is free ($10 for those under 21). Doors at 8 pm.

Straight Tequila Night
Cadillac Bar is hosting its second annual Viva El Tequila Festival on Friday, July 14 from 7 to 10 pm. The bar’s own food truck, Taco Me Crazy, will also be doling out tasty tacos all night. Yours truly is a tequila lover, and the lineup for the night’s tasting is killer: Casamigos, Cazadores, Codigo, Milagro, Riazul, Titanium, along with brews from Spindletop, 8th Wonder, and Karbach.

General Amigos tickets get you the above for $40 ($35 for Landry’s Club Members); El Presidente tickets run $60 ($50 for Landry’s Club Members) and will snag you additional samples from Cazadores Extra Anejo, Codigo Rosa, Milagro Barrel Select Reposado, Titanium Extra Anejo, and exclusive limited brews from 8th Wonder and Karbach. Must be 21 years or older to attend.

Ain’t Nobody Praying for Me
Compton’s Kendrick Lamar is the most acclaimed rapper of this generation with good cause. He can do everything. Lamar can rap thoughtfully, consciously, or with biting humor. He can be cutting emotionally, write a party banger when necessary, do simple, straightforward rap songs, or more conceptual, long-winded jazz-influenced tracks.

Kendrick Lamar followed up 2015’s epic To Pimp a Butterfly with this spring’s lean, taut DAMN., a pretty-much perfect album of 14 quick, concept-free songs. The last time Lamar performed at the Toyota Center he opened for Kanye West — this time he’s headlining, with Houston’s Travis Scott opening and Virginia-based singer/rapper/chameleon D.R.A.M. kicking things off.

Saturday, July 15; doors open at 6:30 pm and tickets start at $49.50.
