This Legendary 71-Year-Old Wine Store Always Delivers: Culinary Bests — Your Year-End Tips

BY // 12.28.15

As 2015 reaches its end and we prepare for 2016, I’ve decided to share a few of my favorite things in the culinary world, sources for what I consider must-haves, from wine to coffee to cheese. I personally endorse the excellence and quality of the products and the customer service you’ll receive, because I have been sourcing provisions from these companies for a long time, and I’ve never been disappointed.

Let’s call it The Brockhaus List of Good Things; it’s a highly personal roster, and I hope it will help you end your year on a delicious note. (And since I am always excited to learn about new sources, please let me know about your go-to culinary merchants.)

Today, we’re talking wine. I’ve been buying from Zachys for a long time, since 1998 or so, and I do so for several great reasons: stellar customer service and great selection. They’ve been in business since 1944, and have forged strong relationships with producers from around the world. Of course, the reason I first began getting my wine from the store in Scarsdale, New York, was because I lived in Westchester County, so Zachys was my local source. I would drive to the village monthly and walk up and down the aisles, stocking up on staples and buying bottles new to me, things that would catch my eye or about which I had read and wanted to try. I was never disappointed in the process, and while I no longer live in New York, I still purchase wines from Zachys (as well as from merchants closer to my current home).

Now is a good time for you to discover one of my favorite US-based wine retailers (the other being Sherry-Lehmann), because all in-stock wines are on offer at a 20-percent discount. Here’s a look at what I’ll be buying for my year-end shipment:

Riesling Anrecht Zeltinger Himmelreicht Selbach-Oster 2013
Gutsriesling Gunther Steinmetz 2012
Riesling Feinherb Halbtrocken Schloss Lieser 2011
Chateau Puech-Haut La Closerie du Pic Rouge 2013
Piper Heidsieck Brut NV
Duluc de Branaire Ducru 2010
Manero Fattoria del Cerro 2013
Crognolo Sette Ponti 2012
Muller Thurgau Dry “Pur Mineral” Franken Furst
Riesling Qba Gelblack Schloss Johannisberg 2011
Stoller Vineyards Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2013
Booker Ripper Paso Robles Grenache 2013
Pouilly Fume Blanc de Fume Didier Dagueneau 2008

Happy holidays, and I hope your 2015 ends on a high note, accompanied by some great wines. (Tomorrow I’ll share my source for coffee beans.)
