The Weekend Guru: Legendary Playboy’s Houston Concert Gets a Last-Minute Switch Up — Your Event Guide

BY // 04.14.17

Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCitys own Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series, this time for a fairly quiet Easter weekend.

The Last of the Famous International Playboys
Legendary Smiths frontman Morrissey makes a rare stop in Houston Friday… that is, if another ailment doesn’t befall him. Morrissey canceled a winter show at White Oak Music Hall due to the “severe illness” of his keyboardist, leaving many diehard fans heartbroken. All seemed well until just a few days ago, when after a show in Tucson, Moz abruptly canceled his San Antonio show after losing his voice.

As of now, Friday’s show is still on, but it has suddenly been moved to the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, which, as a larger venue, opens up more tickets than the originally planned show at White Oak could handle. Morrissey needs no introduction, so hopefully he takes the stage in Sugar Land and pleases Houston fans who’ve been waiting years to see their teenage icon perform live.

All tickets purchased for the White Oak Music Hall performance will be honored. Friday night at the Smart Financial Centre; show at 8 pm. Tickets start at $49.50.

Return of the Mac
Forget about the Kraft stuff your mom made. Macaroni and cheese, like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, has morphed into a canvas for adventurous foodies and chefs alike. (It’s not a controversial pick to say my favorite mac and cheese just might be from The Grove.)

This phenomenon reaches a logical conclusion with the first-ever Mac and Cheese Festival Saturday at Silver Street Studios. A bevy of restaurants (Beavers, Bernadine’s, Harold’s, This Is It Soul Food, La Grange, Liberty Station, Luby’s, and Prohibition stand out, among many others — there are 36 in total) will provide unlimited samples from noon to 4 pm.

Breweries involved include Karbach, Saint Arnold, 8th Wonder, Buffalo Bayou, City Acre Brewing, Permann’s Cider, and Lagunitas. Enjoy works of art from residents at Silver Street and music from DJ Bruce Wayne, plus a SmileBooth.

Jambalaya, Crawfish Pie, and Filet Gumbo
We’re waist-deep in crawdad season and everywhere you go another tent is being set up outside somewhere, the newspaper is being rolled out, corn on the cob is being prepared, and crawfish lovers are rolling up their sleeves to suck the guts out of the Gulf’s mud bugs. In collaboration with renowned chef Lyle Bento, Saint Arnold‘s presents a crawfish boil to remember at trendy Heights spot Southern Goods.

Beginning at 1 pm at just $6 a pound, the beer will be flowing until the crawfish runs out.

MVP! MVP! MVP!
Let’s not make this longer than it needs to be. The third-seed Houston Rockets take on the sixth-seed Oklahoma City Thunder in the most exciting first-round series of the NBA playoffs (give or take a foreseeable Los Angeles Clippers collapse against the imposing Utah Jazz). MVP candidates James Harden and Russell Westbrook will duke it out for an entire series, no doubt making voters who went for either player grip their ballots tightly.

Sunday night at the Toyota Center, in a nationally broadcast game on TNT. The arena doors open at 6:30 pm for the 8 pm game time; ticket prices vary. Rockets in six.
