Plano’s multi-billion dollar development Legacy West welcomed its first hotel a few weeks ago, and it’s a fittingly impressive addition. Located near the headquarters of Toyota, JC Penney and FedEx, the Renaissance Dallas will likely become a hub for business travelers — but it doesn’t feel the least bit corporate.

With its bold Texas-meets-Zen design, three trendy restaurants and a roomy pool deck, the Renaissance has adopted a “business unusual” sensibility.

The $131 million hotel is Plano-based Sam Moon Group’s first venture into the hospitality business. The company, which is known for its handbag and accessories stores across Texas, currently has two other hotels in the works.

“The Moon family has designed and built a world-class project that will set the new standard of luxury for Plano and the surrounding communities,” Bob Bula, the new hotel’s general manager, said in a statement.

The sleek high-rise has 15 stories, 304 guest rooms, 16 suites, 19 meeting rooms, and 30,000-square-feet of ballroom and event space. But the most luxurious amenity? It feels like somewhere you could just hang out and unwind.

The Renaissance Dallas aims to create unexpected guest experiences, and that becomes clear the moment you enter the lobby. Elements of Asian culture, kitschy Texas flair, and striking artwork make for an eye-catching and inviting space. It isn’t just designed for business travel– it accommodates work and play.

The ground floor houses a spacious reception area and the hotel’s three food and drink venues. There’s Whiskey Moon, the Western themed lobby bar, decorated with minimalist furniture and branding irons. Across the hall, golden bird cages hang from the ceiling inside Oma, the hotel’s main three-meal restaurant. Texas Tea House, an adorable grab-and-go cafe, is next door. The Asia-meets-Texas fusion plays a part in both the decor and the cuisine.

The Renaissance Dallas is managed by the Marriott, but it feels more like a cross between the Joule and the W Dallas. That is to say, it’s a hotel that locals will enjoy as much as out-of-towners.
