The Weekend Guru: 5 Under-the-Radar Things to Do Super Bowl Weekend in Houston

BY // 02.03.17

Editor’s Note: Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this new regular weekly series.

My colleague Jailyn Marcel tackled hip, relatively inexpensive functions for Super Bowl week, and I encourage you to read her piece if you want the info on a bevy of parties from outlets like Rolling Stone and Playboy, or if you want to hit up Drake‘s pop-up club The Ballet to see Migos and 21 Savage perform.

But I’ve decided to pick a few hip, even under-the-radar events for Super Bowl weekend, targeting a variety of demographics. (Go Falcons.)

Wheels Down
First things first: we know you are going to be actively trying to do Super Bowl things this weekend, or going out of your way to avoid the fuss. Regardless, you’ll need to get around a traffic-choked city. So bike it.

Houston Bcycle thanks to BBVA Compass, is offering free bike rides until 5 pm Sunday. Just be sure to dock your bike within 60 minutes to check it out again for free.

Power Up
Market Square Park downtown in conjunction with record label and event planners Wonky Power Music is presenting First Down: 2 Days, 10 Bands, 1 Historic Neighborhood, a two-day event consisting of local musicians. Staples ranging from Young Girls and singer/songwriter Dollie Barnes to the exciting DJ stylings of Dayta, a familiar face if you’ve been to an electronic music or hip-hop venue anytime within the past few years.

It happens 11 am to 3 pm Friday and 11 am to 4 pm Sunday. And it’s free.

Major Key
Club Nomadic is the place to be this weekend, as the pop-up club on 2121 Edwards St. near Silver Street Studios welcomes huge stars into its temporary walls. Things kicked off Thursday night with country star Sam Hunt and “Closer” maestros The Chainsmokers.

Friday night will feature pop superstar Bruno Mars, followed by Snapchat maven DJ Khaled. And Saturday brings Taylor Swift  you may have heard of her. Hit Ticketmaster to see what’s still available, but you might have to drop a pretty penny for resale tickets.

Discovery Channel
If something more laid-back (and most importantly, free) is your style, check out Discovery Green‘s Super Bowl LIVE series of concerts all weekend. While most of the week-long lineup has passed (including Solange, who was lovely Thursday night), Friday night you can catch Fort Worth-based crooner Leon Bridges and Saturday night will see blues-rock musician Gary Clark Jr. and local legends ZZ Top hit the stage.

Plenty of cool local acts like Robert Ellis and The Suffers will also perform beforehand, making sure the week ends on a high note.

Playmakers
If you’re looking for something a little different but still Super Bowl related, you can head to the 16th Annual Players’ Wives Fashion Show at haute boutique institution Tootsies at West Ave. Chairs Tami Grace and Tamara McDonald with honorary char Mary Eads have curated a cocktail hour and fashion show benefitting Covenant House and Off the Field Players’ Wives Association.

The chic party kicks off Friday at 11 am; tickets start at $100 for standing room only.
