The Texas Snoop Dogg, a Russian Master and a Lone Star State Legend: Houston’s Hottest Concerts

BY // 01.22.16

Houston’s concert scene brings plenty of action, but we want you to know about the under-the-radar shows as well as the monster acts. PaperCity’s Matthew Ramirez cuts through the noise to find the best things to do around town. Let’s get to this weekend’s top picks.

SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY NO. 10, FRIDAY, JANUARY 22-SUNDAY, JANUARY 24 @ JONES HALL
A trio of 20th-century works is headlined by Shostakovich‘s “deeply personal” symphony written after Stalin’s death. The Russian composer/pianist also kicks things off with his Festive Overture, and sandwiched between these two pieces is Ravel‘s Piano Concerto for the Left HandAndrés Orozco-Estrada conducts; Kirill Gerstein is on the keys.

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, FRIDAY, JANUARY 22-SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7 @ WORTHAM THEATER CENTER
One of the most enduring operas of all time kicks off a two week run this Friday. As recounted by the HGO, The Marriage of Figaro is a “revolutionary masterpiece [that] follows a resourceful valet who uses every trick in the book to keep his comely fiancée out of the clutches of the lustful Count Almaviva. A quintessential comedy of manners, Mozart‘s work is a timeless look at husbands and wives, masters and servants, and hearts both fickle and true— all played to glorious music.”

BOMBON AND FRIENDS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 22 @ NIGHTINGALE ROOM
Bombon is the name of the collective of Latino DJs who host a variety of shows across the hippest venues in town, from Fox Hollow to Boondocks to now Main Street’s Nightingale Room. A blend of traditional Latino music (cumbia, salsa, mambo) with more progressive strains, too (moombahton, tropical house, baile funk, reggaeton), and a smattering of Top 40 and hip-hop, Bombon embody the diversity and variety of life and cultures and values in Houston, the most ethnically diverse city in the country. Admission is free.

DEVIN THE DUDE, FRIDAY, JANUARY 22 @ EASTDOWN WAREHOUSE
Houston’s quintessential stoner rapper, Devin the Dude is also our most famous export who has nothing to do with DJ Screw-indebted sounds, the “country rap tunes” of UGK, or the Paul Wall/Slim Thug/Mike Jones scene. Devin has always had a more west coast vibe with his music, but he’s also never abandoned his Houston roots. Imagine if Snoop was from the south, and you’re halfway there.

SHAKE RUSSELL, SUNDAY, JANUARY 24 @ McGONIGEL’S MUCKY DUCK
A Texas institution for more than 30 years, Shake Russell is an Americana/folk/rock/country artist, the kind of genre-bending musician that the southern region is known for. As the Mucky Duck profile reads, “a prolific songwriter, Shake has written or co-written hundreds of melodies. Through the years, Shake’s songs and albums have frequented the Billboard charts, with many, including “Deep in the West,” “You’ve Got a Lover,” “Put Yourself in My Shoes,” “One More Payment,” and “Our Kind of Love” being recorded by such distinguished artists as Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Ricky Skaggs, Clint Black and Carolyn Dawn Johnson.”
