The Weekend Guru: Our Expert Picks the Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

BY // 01.27.17

Editor’s Note: Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this new regular weekly series.

Things are relatively low-key the weekend before the Super Bowl is due to hit Houston. We’ve picked five of our favorite things on deck this weekend, all of which happen to occur Saturday.

Rise and Grind
Saturday Morning Bake Sale with Lee Ellis at Fluff Bake Bar: Ellis’s latest venture, Cherry Pie Hospitality, hosts a morning-inspired pop-up at Fluff Bake Bar, a midtown favorite ran by Rebecca Masson. We hear the kolaches will be special. 10 am until they sell out.

Liquid-Salt Baes
Cuchara Market: The authentic Mexico City bistro hosts its first Cuchara Market of the year, featuring a whimsical top ingredient: Xcambo liquid salt from Yucatán, a low-sodium solution to flavoring your favorite dishes. The market kicks off at 11 am and runs to 4 pm Saturday, and features Huichol arts and crafts, kitchenware, palm baskets, edibles, Mexican produce, and live marimba music.

I Think 56 Pints Crazy
Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. Fifth Anniversary Party: Touting, “we like to define our success in accomplishments, rather than years,” Buffalo Bayou tips its hat in honor of 56 beers brewed throughout the course of a half-decade for the fledgling, proudly independent Houston brewery. The 1836 amber is a favorite. 6 pm.

Trust the Process
Sevyn Streeter at House of Blues: The Florida-born honey-voiced R&B singer/songwriter keeps a low profile, but she is well-known not only for her collaborations with The-DreamTy Dolla Sign, Puff Daddy, and Gucci Mane, but also as a rallying figure after the Philadelphia 76ers prevented her from singing the national anthem before a game after she showed up wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt.

Streeter has a lovely voice and can write actual songs, not just watered-down Aaliyah karaoke. Catch her at House of Blues before she takes off. Doors at 7 pm; tickets start at $20.

Art Angels
Houston Press Artopia 2017: The unique art+fashion+music+food festival in its ninth year hits the quirky Winter Street Studios for a rollicking mash of 21-and-up adult fun. Music headliners include local faves The Beans.

We’re looking forward to Marco Torres‘ photo exhibition, too. Keep your eyes open for Jumper Maybach, sure to be clowning around. Things kick off at 8 pm; tickets start at $55.
