Your Must-Hear Houston Gigs: A Dreamy Indie Band and the Queen of Neo-Soul

BY // 07.24.16

Houston’s concert scene brings plenty of action, but we want you to know about the under-the-radar shows as well as the monster acts. PaperCity’s Matthew Ramirez cuts through the noise to find the best things to see around town.

WHITNEY, SUNDAY, JULY 24 @ BRONZE PEACOCK ROOM AT HOUSE OF BLUES

Self-described as “country soul,” Whitney, the band featuring ex-members of the Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, released Light Upon the Lake, a sprawling but efficient piece of dreamy indie rock, this spring to much acclaim. Many shows on this tour have sold out, but this is a great chance to see one of a few great bands in the intimate setting of the smallest stage at House of Blues.

JILL SCOTT, WEDNESDAY, JULY 27 @ REVENTION MUSIC CENTER

She’s the queen of neo-soul, and Jill Scott comes to Houston touring behind her 2015 record Woman. A staple of the genre since the late 1990s, Scott has continually been one of the most consistent, rewarding, hard-working, and authentic neo-soul singers there is. Other artists in her class got weirder, more experimental, or fell off, but she has remained. Catch Scott in a rare Houston appearance.
