Nobel Laureate Dies and Irish Writer Studies Evil: What We’re Reading

BY // 07.06.16

Our editors are a diverse lot, and are constantly perusing a long and broad list of publications. Fashion? Art? Architecture? Culinary studies? Semantics? It’s all here. In What We’re Reading, PaperCity shares the wealth.

Elie Wiesel, whose vision and testimony will long reverberate, has died, and the obituaries and memories have been effusive and voluminous. He survived Auschwitz, won the Nobel Peace Prize, and made sure the world could not forget what happened to him and millions of others in Hitler’s concentration camps. He also, at one time, visited Disneyland. Click here for a touching essay on his time with Mickey.

Edna O’Brien is a writer of grace, vision, and strength. Her novels, short stories, and essays have explored a multitude of human emotions, from love to heartbreak to hate and envy. Might her latest novel be her final one?

Are you what you read? Can a great work of art make you a better person? Should you major in English to become a realized individual? The authors ask those questions, and more, about bibliotherapy.

Paris and Fashion, an eternally wonderful pairing. Will Smith thinks so, and so does Jessica Chastain.

It does seem that American politics have gone off the deep end. Congress is ineffective, voters are frustrated — at the least — with the candidates, and nothing is being done about so many grave issues. Jonathan Rauch tells us how this train wreck happened. Read it and weep.
