Event Details

Award-winning journalist, former National Public Radio (NPR) host and current host of the weekly podcast On My Mind, Diane Rehm will be an honoree and keynote speaker at the rescheduled November 5th Gala for Houston Area Parkinson Society (HAPS). Ms. Rehm knows firsthand the devastating effects of Parkinson’s. Her husband of 54 years, John Rehm, had Parkinson’s disease and died in June 2014.
This year’s live auction features a very special and poignant item with boxing gloves signed by Muhammad Ali, who had Parkinson’s disease. The Champ signed the gloves in 1997 to celebrate his 55th birthday and support the campaign, Knock Out Parkinson’s. Other auction items include a South Africa Big Game Photo Safari, a week’s accommodations for four in Tuscany and a trip to Hawaii. Tenenbaum Jewelers has generously donated a $7,500 gift certificate for the Gala’s raffle item.
The 2017 Annual Awards Gala, Changing the Face of Parkinson’s, will be Sunday, November 5th at the Hilton Houston Post Oak, 2001 Post Oak Boulevard from 6-9pm. Preceding the Gala, there will be a special VIP Reception at 5pm with Ms. Rehm. Gala Event Chairs are Hala and Joe Ahmad, and the Young Professional Host Committee Chairs are Izzy and John Schulte.
The evening will include a brief awards ceremony and presentation followed by dinner, live auction and dancing. The organization and individuals being honored are:
• Diane Rehm, receiving the President’s Award
• World Parkinson Coalition, receiving the Roy H. Cullen Quality of Life Award
• Robert Flatt, receiving the Lillie Cullen Quality of Life Award
Gala tickets are $200 each and some tables are still available for underwriting. The special VIP Reception with Ms. Rehm at 5pm is included for Platinum and Gold Underwriters and their guests or with an additional $100 ticket purchase for those attending the Gala.
