The Store That Proves the Midwest Can Be Cool Opens in Dallas: Denim Rules at This Underdog Success

BY Sara Habbas // 09.18.17

With a Midwestern vibe alluding to founder Matt Baldwin‘s roots, city meets prairie in the new Baldwin ready-to-wear boutique in Knox-Henderson.

Housed in the space once home to Steven Alan (which closed after four years), Baldwin is a Kansas City-based men’s and women’s label Matt launched along with his wife, Emily, in 2009. The duo currently has locations in Kansas City, Missouri; Leawood, Kansas; and New York City. They plan to open a store in Los Angeles in October.

The 1,200-square-foot Dallas store stocks the premium denim Baldwin is known for (every piece is made in the United States), plus collections of tops, tees, knitwear, and men’s and women’s hats and accessories. The shop was designed by architect Matthew Hufft, who also hails from Kansas City.

“We feel Dallas is a great next step in the heart of America to continue to bring our authentic denim and collection to the community,” Matt Baldwin says. “We have personal friendships in the city, and it seemed like a natural progression and extension to our KC history.”

Esquire and Vogue magazine have both highlighted Baldwin’s denim on their pages. GQ magazine dubbed him one of the four best new menswear designers in America in 2013. He also appeared on the Fashion Fund  reality TV show in 2015.

Baldwin fêtes its official Dallas grand opening on Thursday, September 28, from 5 to 7 pm.
