Britain Takes Over The Galleria Due to Special Circumstances: Chic Author Enjoys a Champagne Book Night

Everything was veddy, veddy stylish at Burberry in the Galleria Monday night when British fashionista and popular writer Plum Sykes greeted a flock of style setters during a champagne-fueled book signing for her third tome, Party Girls Die in Pearls.

Wearing a Burberry floral frock, Marchesa shoes, and pearls, of course, the contributing editor to Vogue explained her connection with the United Kingdom label. “We’re both British and we’re both in fashion,” she said. “I have worked with the Burberry team on lots of things for American Vogue and I’ve done two books prior to this where I’ve also worked with Burberry . . .  I do think it’s a good fit because we are both very British. You know the chic, cool British thing in what we do.”

Chic and cool — that would describe the fashions that the ladies, many dressed in Burberry, were pouring over when not chatting up Plum. Of special interest was the DK88 handbag collection, which was introduced at London Fashion Week in February and has been spotted on celebs around the globe.

In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if Plum Sykes’ latest protagonist, Ursula Flowerbutton, carried a DK88 during her exploits in Oxford, England, of the 1980s. As one reviewer described the book, it’s Clueless meets Agatha Christie.

“I actually feel that is a huge compliment,” Sykes said. “That’s something I’m trying to do, a mash up of the kind of comic genre and the romantic comedy with a little bit of a murder mystery, a little bit of a crime. I didn’t want to do something dark or the Scandi noire sort of thing. I do like to do something very light and bubbly and fun.”

And, yes, the bubbly flowed on this evening hosted by sisters-in-law, long time friend Allison Sarofim, jetting in from New York for the fete, and Courtney Sarofim. That duo hosted a book signing party for Sykes (The Debutante Divorcee) a decade ago in the Sarofim party house on River Oaks Boulevard. So instead of the full-blown catering thing at home, the Sarofims treated Sykes to dinner at Yauatcha.

Ensuring that all was perfection in the Burberry boutique was the firm’s partnerships and experiences director Anne Vincent in from New York.
