River Oaks District Reveal: A Sneak Peek Inside Houston’s Hot New Shopping Spot

BY // 06.30.15

A temporary Tom Ford sign is up, and 72 newly planted mature oak trees are flourishing at the River Oaks District. An affirmative sign of the luxury that is to come, developer OliverMcMillen pulled out all the stops for the hard-hat media preview of the highly anticipated shopping, dining and entertaining destination located on Westheimer near 610. Todd Events created a lush green scene with boxwoods, greenery and topiary amidst the construction, with a breakfast bar topped by towering arrangements of green roses, hydrangea and succulents. A Fare Extraordinaire served up coffee, wheatgrass shots and smoked salmon, spinach quiche and yogurt parfaits. Abiding by the “chic business casual” dress code, editors, PR mavens and bloggers turned out with Hermès Birkin bags and Valentino Rockstuds accessorized with white hard hats and citron vests emblazoned with the ROD logo.

OliverMcMillen’s Kyle Dorand gave tours of the 14-acre wonderland, pointing out the intersection of chic: an immense Dior flagship, a gleaming Cartier boutique and a two-story 10,000-square-foot Hermès flagship. Native stone creates unity throughout the development, while each retailer has designed its own storefront to provide a “downtown sense.” Canopies with fans create shade over each storefront while circulating air. The numbers are impressive: 15-foot-wide sidewalks, 295,000 square feet of retail space, 73,000 square feet of boutique office space in a glass box and 279 luxury apartments. Parking will be a breeze, too: An app on your phone enables the flash valet to bring your car to you in front of, say, Roberto Cavalli when you’re ready to leave. (But with dining, shopping, entertainment and living space, it’s hard to imagine why you’d want to go.)

River Oaks District officially opens to the public Thursday, October 1, with retailers continuing to open throughout the fall and spring of 2016.
