Scents Curated for Every Type of Woman: Five Questions for Francis Kurkdjian

BY Karlie Morris // 07.18.16

Francis Kurkdjian has made a name for himself in the fragrance industry, having worked for Jean Paul Gaultier, Acqua di Parma, and Dior, to name a few. His eponymous line, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, is sold exclusively at Neiman Marcus. Our faves: À La Rose and the NM beauty award winner, Baccarat Rouge. We sat down recently with the French perfumer at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas Las Colinas to learn a bit more about him and his new collection, “The Lights of Paris.”

Tell us about your background as a perfumer.
I’ve been creating perfume for a bit more than 20 years now. I started creating fragrances when I was 24; the first one was Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier, and then I worked for many fashion houses and luxury brands: Dior, Guerlin, Lancome, Armani. Lately, I’ve been working for Burberry a lot.

What is special about the newest MFK releases?
The idea was to translate the vibrancy and the image of Paris. The subtitle of the two scents is “The Lights of Paris.” One scent is Petit Matin, which is early morning, and the other one is called Grand Soir, meaning grand evening. [I wanted to incorporate] my two favorite moments of the day, the early morning and late at night.

What inspires you when creating fragrance?
It’s very diverse. Our moods and feelings change throughout the day, throughout the week, and throughout life. We are not consistent. The idea is to offer a range of fragrances that accompany you during all those moments. Some people are loyal to one perfume; some people are more into diversity. We go from very fresh fragrances — like one of our best sellers, Aqua Universalis — to dark notes and ambery fragrances and patchouli.

Favorite scent to wear?
I don’t wear any scents. I work on my fragrances, but personally I don’t wear anything.

Have you had the opportunity to explore Dallas?
No, but next year my favorite artist is being featured here in Dallas. His name is James Turrell. He does a lot of installations with lights and neon. It’s quite incredible. I told my team that next time I want to stay two extra days — one to work and then one to go sightseeing.
