For many, the holiday gifting process is a frenzied affair. What will satisfy the girl who has everything, the guy who wants nothing, and the children who want it all? And more importantly, where are those perfect gifts hiding? PaperCity has selected a range of Houston shops brimming with Yuletide treasures, and we’re letting you in on the bounty. It’s our way of making your shopping experience a little easier and a lot more fun.
We’ll tell you about some of our favorite merchants, and share gift recommendations from the people who make the stores special. Today, we take you to Space Montrose.
Bartering with my dad has become a holiday tradition. For the past five years, I’ve been tasked with securing the Christmas presents for our entire extended family, and each year my dad reiterates that my gifting budget is out of control. It’s always the same dance — he gives me a figure, I say it’s not enough, and in the end we agree on an amount that still allows me to buy most of the gifts on my original list.
Of course, he does have a point; I could afford to take my holiday spending down a notch, which is why this past year I embarked on a hunt for more affordable, one-of-a-kind gifts.
Following an intense session of gorging at Common Bond, I stumbled upon its neighbor Space Montrose — a boutique highlighting products from local artists and artisans. I left with three bags and 90 percent of my Christmas shopping completed. Featuring everything from handmade jewelry to cutting boards plastered with famous Houston landmarks, Space provides an array of uncommon, budget-friendly goods, which makes it one of our go-to holiday shops for years to come.
With just seven days until Christmas Day, owner Leila Peraza lets us in on how she selects the store’s unique inventory, her favorite holiday gift picks and much more.
What is Space Montrose’s mission?
Space Montrose is a place where we celebrate inspiration, passion, and creativity. We all want to be inspired by someone or something. We choose to highlight people who live in the United States, plus local artisans, because it is key to follow a path to the awakening of the world. Individuals need to be inspired, and they need to be driven by a passion and willingness to create. We appeal to Houstonians and people from all over looking for unique handcrafted art and design. Space Montrose is a place to find a treasure for you and a place for gifts to share.
How do decide which products to buy for the store, and how do you choose which local artisans to feature?
Who? Why? How? When? etc. are all key questions to ask when it comes to handcrafted art and design. We travel to other cities to meet artists in markets where they set up their work. We want to know as much as possible about our exhibitors’ creation process. This allows us to share the stories with our clients and make a truer connection between artist and customer.
On Space Montrose exclusives.
We collaborate with artists and designers to create unique items exclusively for Space Montrose. We have everything from Montrose T-shirts and Montrose mugs to metallic paper photography. We also advise some artists on what we think could be an interesting approach to their work; we have created some jewelry, like our custom-made Montrose and Innerloop rings by Snash Jewelry, as well as baby clothing and art in this way.
What do you think is the importance of shopping local?
Shopping local allows our community to stay active and vibrant. We are all in it to make Houston a better place for our children, and what better way to do this than to show them how special it is to share, smile, engage, and support our entrepreneurial spirit? Shopping local keeps communities inspired.
