Women’s Hair Loss and Navigating the Confusing World of Wigs: A Dallas Beauty Maven’s New Book Tackles Unspoken Dilemmas

BY // 08.16.17

Dallas-based hair and makeup artist Jeanna Doyle is using her 25 years of industry experience and beauty expertise to make life a little easier for cancer patients and others.

There are tens of millions of women in the United States who are experiencing hair loss, but until recently, they were left on their own to navigate these difficult changes. Doyle’s new book, Wig ED is a first-of-its kind beauty book that gives women a step-by-step guide before they enter the unfamiliar world of wigs.

“It’s designed for them to get everything they need in one sitting. It’s a very practical guide that’s very beautifully illustrated, so it’s a celebration of beauty rather than a reminder of illness,” Doyle tells PaperCity.

Over the course of her career, Doyle has worked in fashion and advertising settings as well as medical and corrective makeup.

When a friend began treatment for cancer, the beauty expert realized her knowledge could help other women going through the same thing. “I had a girlfriend who got breast cancer and I helped her with her journey, and I realized with my background in advertising and fashion I had all this information about this,” Doyle says.

Wanting to start a free support group, Doyle contact UT Southwestern and founded Suite HOPE (Helping Oncology Patients Esthetically) to provide women with education and support to address the changes in their appearance during treatment.

But Doyle wanted to find a way to help more women dealing with hair loss.

“It was really shocking when I looked at the numbers, because there are 30 million women in the U.S. with hereditary hair loss, 6.7 million women in the U.S. with cancer, and 6.5 million people in the U.S. with alopecia – and there was nothing on the subject. No guide to help you select a wig. I knew I wanted to create something really beautiful and user-friendly,” she says.

In Wig ED, Doyle takes readers through each step in the process – from how to select the right wig to how to care for it and beyond. Whether you’re experiencing hair loss or buying a wig for any other reason, the book simplifies a sometimes intimidating process. Wig ED is now available in print and as an ebook on Amazon.

The author will make an appearance at The Beauty Box salon in Dallas for a book signing party on August 20 from 4 to 6 p.m.

August is also National Hair Loss Awareness month. Suite Hope is trying to bring attention to this in a fun way on August 26 with Solidarity Saturday. The nonprofit wants you to show your support for those dealing with hair loss by gathering your friends, getting a wig, wearing it, and sharing it on social media. See more details here.
