Houston’s Best Modern Homes: Flood-Free Marvels Shown Off in Tour that Now Benefits Harvey Victims

BY // 09.12.17

The Modern Architecture + Design Society (MA+DS) has selected eight homes to showcase on its 7th annual Modern Home Tour Saturday, September 23. Following the devastation of so many homes from Hurricane Harvey, the organizers have opted to keep the tour scheduled as planned with a refocus to support relief programs for Houstonians in need.

The tour, a cornerstone event for MA+DS, is self-guided and enables tour-goers to learn from homeowners the benefits of living in a modern home, as well as interaction with the architects, builders, and designers responsible. This year’s tour includes the following homes and architects/designers:

— University Place home designed by studioMET

— Energy Corridor home designed by studioMET

— The “Hammer Residence” in University Place designed by m + a architecture studio

— Stratulate Residence, renovated by Charles Todd Helton

Lawndale Art Center is the longstanding beneficiary of the tour. In addition, this year MA+DS has added new ticketing options, which includes access to an after-tour party, that will direct funds toward helping Houstonians who have been impacted by Harvey. They have also created an option for ticket purchasers to contribute to Houston relief efforts now in exchange for a discount on 2018 tour tickets nationwide (MA+DS is based on Austin and features dozens of home tours in the U.S. and Canada).

Especially with the new incentives to help aid in recovery, all eight tour participants are still on board with the tour (all homes on the tour were spared major damage), despite one firm dealing with flooding and at least one firm’s staff member dealing with a flooded home.
