Instagrams from Milan: Cool Concepts Shown Off in International Furniture Fight — See the Living Rooms of the Future

BY // 04.07.17

This week, the battle is fought in Milan at the annual and inspiring furniture fair, “Il Salone del Mobile” (#SalonedelMobile2017), which concludes Saturday, April 9.

While a few of my dear friends descend on the world’s capital of sophistication to present their latest concepts and designs, I refuse to take sides and instead choose to watch it all unfold on Instagram. Here are some of the best and brightest of the week:

Lee Broom
The British designer celebrating 10 years in the field presented his greatest hits of furniture and lighting designs on an all-white moving carousel — a metaphysical stage filled with surreal atmospheric light that also included his latest collaboration with Wedgwood (four limited edition urns to die for).

Martina Mondadori
The über-chic founder of the must-subscribe-to Cabana Magazine gave us more of her magical interiors. In a presentation for Airbnb inside the Casa degli Atellani, she curated dreamy vignettes which included designer Ashley Hicks totem-like sculptures and some of Design Miami director Rodman Primack‘s personal antique fabric collection from Guatemala.

Martin Brudnizki
Famous for his stylish restaurant and hotel designs around the world, Brudnizki added a series of his elegant causeway candlesticks to the Wallpaper presentation, titled #HolyHandMade.

Cambell-Rey
The creative duo premiered their first table collection with a modernist reinterpretation of geometric Italian marble top insertions. And, you can scoop them up now. The new designs are already available on the online shopping site 1stdibs.

Luca Vitali
This under-the-radar dealer (the best-kept secret in Milan for exceptional modernist finds) brought out the big guns of ’50s masterpieces at his Officina Antiquaria. Top pick: a rare pair of armchairs with wheels, designed in 1948 by Guglielmo Pecorini for the first-class deck of Italian cruise liner Giulio Cesare.

Jacopo Etro
The brand showed off its new fabric collection at its exclusive store in Vicolo Fiori. Silks, damasks, and velvets merge in oriental patterns inspired by Chinese ancestral portraits and antique Ikat and Eastern rug designs.

Rossana Orlandi
The gallery presented a technicolor takeover with amazing Germans Ermics ombré glass chairs and Enrico Marone Cinzano’s “Stealth Project Part 1” tables.

Dolce & Gabbana
The iconic fashion house collaborated with Smeg to dress up some of the kitchen appliance company’s most iconic utilitarian objects in the classical Sicilian designs the house is known for. These sweet treats will bring you a smile when it’s time to make yourself yet another green juice.

Yves Behar
The genius behind Jawbone gave us a television that doubles as a work of art. The Frame is a sleek design in collaboration with Samsung that can be hung on the wall or placed on a tripod. The screen functions as a custom-made video art collection with more than 100 works included and curated by an art advisor.

Hermès
The French fashion staple presented its latest luxurious home furniture collection. The Nubi-quilted cashmere patchwork throw by artisan Selgui Lee stole the show.

Gaetano Pesce
While my friends at the Philip Johnson Glass House in Connecticut and its Brick House (which will be restored come 2018) posted pics of the Italian design master’s colorful Feltro Chairs as their interior inspiration, his large outdoor installation was unveiled in the Brera District of Milan, providing a most popular outdoor selfie opportunity.

Nina Yashar
It seems that the best presentation of classics with a twist goes to the “Queen of Design” and her Nilufar Gallery Depot space. With carefully selected pairings of vintage and contemporary pieces, the collection of inspiring and, at times, contrasting groupings makes her staged settings always unique and suggestive of cozy modern living on a grand scale.
