Hall of Fame Houston Chef’s Batman House Hits the Market: Hunters Creek Marvel Boasts a Waterfall and 205-Inch Movie Screen

BY // 06.12.17

When the glass roof of the atrium in the Hunters Creek home is open along with the kitchen windows that lead to the pool terrace, it’s a grand indoor/outdoor feel. As Food & Wine Hall of Fame chef Michael Cordúa says of his home, “It becomes one room and you don’t know where you are. Am I inside? Am I outside?”

And that is one of the charms of the 7,100 square foot dwelling that has Michael and Lucia Cordúa nostalgic about giving up the home where they raised their family. But, alas, their two daughters have married, had children, and moved to distant states. “The family shrunk,” explains Lucia. Now they are more interested in traveling than cocooning.

(Their son, chef David Cordúa, has his own home in Midtown.)

“But I love the house,” Michael tells a host of real estate agents attending a midday open house. “This is like a James Bond or a Batman place. If Batman were a chef he would live here,” he joyfully declares.

The kitchen bar shows just how magical this house can be.

In a move to tempt agents to take a look-see at the home in the gated community of Saddlewood Estates, the Cordúas are on hand to welcome them and offer a tempting array of finger foods. The marble kitchen counter is lined with three kinds of empanadas,  Americas restaurant’s signature banana chips and dipping sauce, caprese salad bites, and Latin American sweets.  A staffer from the Cordúa restaurant family replenishes the dishes throughout the two-hour open house.

Michael explains that this kitchen, one of three, is where he and Lucia prepare their meals. But when the entire family is on hand, the outdoor kitchen comes into play. And what a cooking area. It includes a wood-burning pizza oven, a rotisserie grill, double burners and a refrigerator — all overlooking the pool terrace which resembles that of an elegant villa in Cabo. The third kitchen? It’s a catering kitchen in the garage.

“When we do our charity fundraisers where guests pay $1,000 a person, that’s where we cook,” Michael says. Tables are set in the dining room and in the central atrium, one of several unique features in the house.

Those would include the 205-inch screen which scrolls down from the second floor of the air-conditioned atrium. “In the evening, you can open the roof,” Michael says, “and you are outdoors in your house watching whatever you want to be watching on the big screen.” Monday Night Football comes first to his mind.

To our list of elements we love about this house we add the rooftop sky deck with treetop views, the spa pool with waterfall that echoes the sound of flowing water from the fountain in the atrium, the Programme Martin system in the double  master closet, the vast game room on the second floor, and the outdoor bar stool seating at the retractable kitchen window.

John Daugherty’s Barbara Josephson and Tania Amin have the listing for the home that is priced at $2.89 million.
