Houston’s New High Life: A Cloud-Hugging Skyscraper Will Tower Over River Oaks and Make Swimming a Rich Man’s Joy

BY Chris Baldwin and Jailyn Marcel // 12.28.15

With more than 40 new luxury high-rise and mid-rise projects in various stages of construction in Houston, keeping up with the city’s vertical boom requires much more than counting cranes. In this new PaperCity online series, we’ll look at all the top luxury high-rises and mid-rises in various stages of completion throughout the region. During the next few months, we’ll give you inside looks at projects from Pearland to Galveston and everywhere in between.

We’ll compare square footages, amenities, views from the top, luxe factors, walkability and price for the definitive guide to Houston’s new high life. You’ll find out about everything from the starchitects to the kitchen specs to the pet perks.

Next up: Arabella, the gleaming 30-story showcase skyscraper that will tower up in the luxury high-rise haven that’s cropping up around the River Oaks District. Arabella’s best penthouse condos — there are 10 of them — will all have their own private terrace swimming pools. Swimming in the clouds? Who isn’t down for that?

It will take nearly $4 million to get you there (prices for smaller, lower-floored units at Arabella start at $800,000). The building — which is being shepherded by Randall Davis and Roberto Contresas — plays off the cloud image by featuring 10-foot-tall fritted glass windows that have the bottom two feet of the windows spotted with white dots.

That distinctive design wrinkle has been used by Frank Gehry and on a number of Richard Meier‘s New York skyscrapers. Nearly three years before its first residents will move in, Arabella already finds itself in lofty company.

Project: ARABELLA
