Houston interior designer Ashley Goforth goes both ways. Her work straddles the line between ultra-luxe and ultra-livable. With two children of her own, she designs for people who actually live in their homes. “There’s a definite balance between elegance and comfort,” she says. Case in point: Her husband and children are remanded to her in-laws on the day of our shoot. Take a peek inside her Memorial ranch-style abode to get a sense of her real-life style — and high-lo mix mantra.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE
Classic and elegant but comfortable at the same time. I try to create timeless environments that are livable but still reflect the personalities and lives of its inhabitants.

“I definitely splurge on artwork, I have been collecting for 15 years — my artwork is the personality of my home.”

FAVORITE PAINT COLOR?
Sherwin Williams Snowbound and Tricorn Black. One is the perfect light, and one the perfect dark.

COLOR OR NEUTRAL PALLETTE?
I gravitate toward a more neutral color palette, but I always incorporate some color in each project. As far as color goes, I tend to always be drawn to rich jewel tones: teal, eggplant and navy.

WHOSE “NEST” DO YOU ADMIRE?
I love anything that Daniel Ramouldez or Todd Alexander Romano does. They are great at mixing interesting textures and design elements.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN THE HOUSE?
It would have to be my living room. I believe it exemplifies all the elements of my design philosophy: a mix of old and new, dark and light, texture and color. I find all my designs have a balance of masculine and feminine lines.

WHERE DO YOU SPEND THE MOST TIME?
The kitchen. Cooking is my second favorite creative pastime. I cook five out of seven nights of the week. Between cooking and cleaning, I pretty much live in the kitchen.

WHAT DO YOU SPLURGE ON? AND WHERE DO YOU TRY TO SAVE?
I definitely splurge on artwork, I have been collecting for 15 years — my artwork is the personality of my home. I encourage all my clients to save a portion of their budgets for art. It truly transforms a space. And I try to save on lighting. There are so many wonderful designs on the market. I have several pieces from Ikea and West Elm that are as stylish as the expensive brands.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION?
Santa Barbara, California. It truly is heaven on earth.

WHAT’S ON YOUR COFFEE TABLE RIGHT NOW?
Any art book with a graphic or colorful cover — I collect them. You can never have enough.

PERSONAL STATIONERY
I love anything designed by Prentiss Douthit — they have simple and fresh designs. They have designed everything from my wedding invitation to my baby announcements.

LINENS?
Sferra — always white and cotton percale.

NEXT PURCHASE?
I feel my walls are covered and my rooms and filled. Most likely some fresh flowers.
