New River Oaks High-Rise With $3 Million Condos Thinks Big

One of Houston’s Most Memorable Skyscrapers?

BY Chris Baldwin and Jailyn Marcel // 12.15.15

With more than 40 new luxury high-rise and mid-rise projects in various stages of construction in Houston, keeping up with the city’s vertical building boom requires much more than counting cranes. In this new PaperCity online series, we’ll look at the top high-rises and mid-rises in various stages of completion throughout the region. During the coming months, we’ll give you inside looks at upscale apartment and condo buildings from The Woodlands to Galveston and all points between.

We’ll compare square footages, amenities, views from the top, luxe factors, walkability and price for the definitive guide to Houston’s new luxury high life. You’ll find out about everything from the starchitects to the kitchen specs to the pet perks.

Today our focus turns to  The Wilshire — the ultra high-end tower (you’re not getting in the door for less than 800 grand) right next to the River Oaks District. Legendary 87-year-old Houston developer Robert Bland calls it “the best building” he’s ever been a part of. And Bland has been developing major buildings for decades and decades, including some of Houston’s most memorable structures.

“Other people have to decide if it’s a significant building or not,” he tells PaperCity. “But I believe it has as good of a chance as anything we’ve ever done.”

This place is about more than just the floor-to-ceiling windows, the views and the perks. The Wilshire’s more than 50 percent sold already — and it’s nearly two years from being completed.
