Stylish Power Players: Two Dallas Design Stars Make Architectural Digest’s Vaunted Top 100

BY // 01.12.16

Since 1990, Architectural Digest has been naming the world’s most preeminent designers and architects to its AD100 list, which is published every two years. The new 2016 list is out, and it includes two of our own — Dallas interior designers Emily Summers and Jan Showers. (San Antonio- and NYC-based architecture firm Lake/Flato is also included.)

A more prestigious group of stylemakers would be hard to find. Among this year’s honorees are Axel Vervoordt, Bunny Williams, Darryl Carter, Jacques Grange, Jean-Louis Deniot, Kelly Wearstler, Michael Smith, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Miles Redd, Rose Tarlow Design, Richard Meier & Partners Architects, Studio Sofield Inc., Vicente Wolf and Victoria Hagan.

Emily Summers, who has been on the list steadily since 2007, is known for her clean interiors featuring 20th- and 21st-century furnishings and museum-worthy contemporary art. Summers’ Dallas store, Studio 54, carries modernist originals by such great furniture designers as Edward Wormley and Robsjohn-Gibbings, along with Emily Summers Studio Line, and furniture and art by contemporary artists. Recently, she became the exclusive distributor in North America for T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Saridis of Athens. Currently, she’s working on a renovation and expansion of the Steven Holl-designed Stretto house in Dallas with Holl and local architect Max Levy. Summers is also designing a contemporary barn in upstate New York with Lake/Flato.

Jan Showers, who was also named to the AD100 in 2014, is best known for her glamorous interiors that feature glittering Venetian glass lighting and fine French and Italian mid-century antiques. Showers is also gearing up for her namesake showroom’s 20th anniversary this fall. Stocked goods include all the French and Italian mid-century antiques and Venetian glass her design style has become synonymous with, including pieces by Rene Prou, Venini and Maison Jansen. Showers’ own line, The Collection, includes upholstered pieces, lighting and casegoods.

This spring and fall, she is launching a complete lifestyle collection of furniture, lighting, wall coverings and rugs for KravetCouture, along with outdoor furnishings for Michael Taylor Designs, and rug lines for both Moattar and Kyle Bunting.
