Taking Shape: Susan Hornbeak Ortiz for Shine by S.H.O.

BY Rebecca Sherman // 06.09.15

Furniture designer Susan Hornbeak Ortiz’ sculptural and glamorous new collection for Shine by S.H.O. has made its way to Dallas via the Laura Lee Clark showroom. California-based Ortiz derives inspiration from her favorite genres of design, including architecture, jewelry and haute couture. Among the nine pieces are the jagged Ambroise sconce, handmade in antiqued gold leaf over oak with polished brass, which references 1960s-era Brutalist architecture and design, and the angular Jolie console, fashioned after chunky 1960s jewelry, made of ebony walnut and brushed brass inlay. Turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau furniture sparked the design for Theo, a hand-carved ebony walnut table. Gaudì’s curved architecture — seen during a trip Ortiz made to Spain — influenced the gentle slope of the velvet Sandrine sofa and chaise, with their elegant polished brass legs. And the Raoul low club chair, with its horizontal channeling, is Ortiz’s take on the exquisite fashion of Jean Paul Gaultier. $4,750 to $19,995, at Laura Lee Clark, 1515 Slocum St., 214.265.7272.
