The Homey High-Rise: New 17-Story Houston Tower Values Comfort Over High-Tech Gadgets

BY // 10.05.15

Houston’s glitzy high-rise building boom is getting a new, more understated entry. 6300 Woodway — a previously unpublicized project from Pelican Builders — aims to make high-rise living more comfy.

That’s right, comfy.

In a rising sea of gleaming glass towers with over-the-top amenities and high-tech touches galore, this new 17-story building stands out with its commitment to “warm” and more home-like environs. Especially if your home happens to be one of the nearby mansions of Memorial and Tanglewood.

“The idea is to make the transition to high-rise living as easy as possible,” legendary 87-year-old Houston developer Robert Bland, the founder and head of Pelican Builders, tells PaperCity in an exclusive phone interview.

To ensure that happens, Pelican is tapping well-known Houston interior designer Kara Childress to give 6300 Woodway’s interiors the feel of a resort you might find in Aspen, La Jolla or the Texas Hill Country. Think warm subdued colors, plenty of wood and a host of comfortable lounging areas.

“Nothing in this building will be modern, all spaces will be high-end but comfortable and relaxing,” Pelican Builders president Derek Darnell emails PaperCity. “We want residents of the surrounding neighborhoods to feel like they don’t have to make a wholesale change in their lifestyle and furnishings if they are ready to simplify their living.”

“Simplify” doesn’t necessarily mean shrunken, though. The condos for sale in 6300 Woodway will range from 2,100 to 6,000-plus square feet. A total of 58 condos will be spread over 17 floors. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016 and finish in the summer of 2018. And the future residents figure to have a wallet power that fits right in with the rest of the neighborhood.

Prices for 6300 Woodway’s units range from $1.1 million to more than $4 million. This is nobody’s starter home.

With that in mind, a top-floor resident’s lounge — which will be more like an upscale club room or plush resort escape — will offer sweeping views of both the treetops of Memorial/Tanglewood and the impressive buildings of The Galleria area. A resort-style pool and grand lawn on the ground level complete the retreat-feel vision.

Just because 6300 Woodway shuns showiness doesn’t mean it won’t have all the amenities. With Houston Country Club nearby and a neighborhood that’s the front line of Houston’s new upscale grocery store wars (see the new Tanglewood H-E-B and Table 57 restaurant), residents will be in the heart of it all, but in a decidedly different manner. “This one is really about being in a great neighborhood,” Bland says.

Rather than being downtown or right by the new showcase shopping of The River Oaks District, 6300 Woodway will be in an ultra-livable area. It’s not what you expect from a high-rise — and that’s the point.
