The Weirdest Houses in Houston: A New Home Tour Celebrates Unique, Iconic and Just Plain Odd Treasures

BY // 09.17.16

Just when the sight of another new multistoried townhouse complex makes you cringe, Weird Homes Tour arrives to celebrate what remains of Houston’s domestic fabric — the unique, iconoclastic, and odd. On Saturday, October 8, the tour, founded by entrepreneurs Chelle and David Neff in Austin, will celebrate its inaugural Houston outing, with PaperCity as media sponsor and a beneficiary nonprofit, soon to be announced.

Eight to 10 intriguing stops are being lined up by Kathryn Lott and Allison Lott, co-producers of Lott Entertainment.

Among the headlining homes: Beverley and Wayne Gilbert‘s temple of industrial cool, in the Heights, a design by architect Scott Strasser, that has been published in PaperCity (you may be surprised about the painting materials that make it into Gilbert’s canvases); Bonnie Blue‘s mural-adorned abode with its collection of kitschy collectibles; Erma Lee’s fire station turned dwelling and its Inspirational Art Garden, in plain sight on a well traffic thoroughfare near Garden Oaks; the infamous Hippo House, home to Sue Shefman and her horde of 2,000-plus hippo-inspired finds; the historic Heights residence of astute outsider art collector/curator Jay Wehnert and wife, Victoria; and Dawn Fudge‘s infamous warehouse, home to relics from the Rice Hotel, plus statement pieces from past Art Car Balls. Make sure to attend the lively post-tour party at the utterly strange time capsule/downtown lair of notsuoH owner, the inimitable Jim Pirtle, where you can clink cocktails in his rarely glimpsed residence.

Weird Homes Tour, Saturday, October 8, 10 am to 6 pm; VIP Party 6 to 9 pm; tickets $25 tour, $45 with VIP Party; info/tickets weirdhomestour.com.
