This $10 Costco Wine Find is an Everyday Surprise — and Perfect for Any EuroCave

BY // 03.03.17

If you are accustomed to drinking Pinot Noir from Oregon, I’d like you to try one from France soon. Burgundy, to be exact.

It’s the 2014 Marie André Bourgogne Pinot Noir, and it’s a Costco selection, so I’m going to also advise you to buy some lamb loin chops from Costco and pair this wine with them.

To begin, take a look at the color of the Marie André in your glass. Garnet is what you see, and a clarity and brightness that speaks of Pinot Noir. Hold it to the light and admire.

On the nose, this wine is floral — if you happen to have a bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir at hand, open it and compare — think muted rose, or perhaps cherry. Swirl the glass and you’ll get strawberry, the wild kind. This is a seductive pour for an everyday wine. After a few minutes in the glass, a slight spiciness emerges, a touch of cinnamon.

Go ahead, open this bottle and serve it with lamb chops.

In the mouth, you will experience a smoothness; tannins in our bottle were a touch too tight, dense, but not in an unpleasant manner. If you like balance, the acidity here will please you. A first taste was refreshing; 10 minutes in the glass, however, transformed this wine into a much more rewarding experience.

As I wrote, if you pair this wine with food, try lamb chops. Marinate them in some olive oil, garlic, and parsley, plus a touch of salt, then grill them for a few minutes on each side. Let them rest for five minutes, and serve them with a mild sauce made of shallots, butter, and some of the Marie André.

That’s what we did, and I think you will like the results. This wine will also go well with salmon, or mushrooms.

Pinot Noir is a very temperamental grape, and the French have been growing it for a long time. Some say Burgundy is the region from which the best Pinot Noirs come. The 2014 Marie André Bourgogne is not that, but as a daily pour it is more than worthy of a place in your EuroCave.

You can find this for around $10.
