Oxheart Replacement Restaurant’s New Chef Shows Off his Cooking in Outdoor Dining Series

What do you get when one of The Heights’ most popular whiskey havens teams up with a James Beard award-winning chef and his chef de cuisine? A cooking series of epic proportions. Whiskey icehouse Eight Row Flint brings back its signature Outdoor Cooking series Tuesday evening (June 13), and for the first time ever, the event will feature a guest chef.

Chef Jason White, who will serve as the chef de cuisine at acclaimed chef Justin Yu‘s much-anticipated new restaurant Theodore Rex, serves as the culinary man of the hour, whipping up coal-grilled chicken with green garlic broth and chicken fat rice on Eight Row’s patio — a fitting match given White’s close connection with Eight Row Flint’s restaurant group Agricole Hospitality. In fact, White helped chef/owner Ryan Pera open Agricole sister restaurant Revival Market back in 2011.

“Jason was integral to the opening of Revival,” Pera says. “We couldn’t have done it without him. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Jason and Justin have planned for Theodore Rex, and I’m honored for Jason to cook for us at Eight Row.”

While many details about Theodore Rex are still being kept under wraps, this event will still give eager foodies a glimpse of what’s to come from the powerhouse culinary duo.

Yu unveiled the restaurant’s name via Instagram on Friday, June 2. The moniker is an ode to his nephew Theodore, who Yu described as “pretty much the only person in this world who can actually turn that frown upside down.”

Theodore Rex will fill the warehouse district space at 1302 Nance Street which housed Vu’s Oxheart, the prominent vegetable-centric temple widely regarded as arguably Houston’s best restaurant before Yu closed it earlier this year. Neither a featured cuisine nor a prospective opening date have been revealed for this new Oxheart replacement restaurant.

In the meantime, hungry Houstonians can get a taste of White’s cooking every Tuesday (June 13, 20, and 27) through the end of the month.
