What: Houston Center for Literacy annual Mayor’s Literacy Leadership Breakfast

Where: River Oaks Country Club

PC Moment: Reveille came early for more than 350 proponents of literacy who, over bacon and eggs, raised $150,000 for the center’s adult literacy programming. Mayor Sylvester Turner rallied the troops with his call for improving the city’s embarrassingly low rate of adult literacy. One in every five adult Houstonians is functionally illiterate.

The program was led by emcee Khambrel Marshall with honoree Carlos Correa in absentia. (The star shortstop had a game in Minnesota the night before. No red-eye early morning for this Astros star.) Houston Children’s Charity CEO Laura Ward accepted on his behalf.

Who: Luncheon chairs Kim and Dan Tutcher, HCL president and CEO Sheri Suarez Foreman, HCL board president Leisa Holland Nelson, Bill Baldwin, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, City Councilman David Robinson, Susan Sarofim, Cyndy Garza Roberts, Bobbie Nau, Chree Boydston, Stephanie Tsuru, City Controller Chris Brown, Marilu Garza, Kathryn Ketelsen, Sarah and Alfred Moran, and Diane Englet.
