Lynn Wyatt Lunches with British Royalty in Houston: And a Sentimental Toast Brings Everyone to Tears

BY // 05.15.17

Laughter, tears and warm and fuzzy hugs — the intimate Mother’s Day Lunch with Lynn and Oscar Wyatt covered the emotional spectrum.

And what delicious fun it was, laced with Lynn’s star-studded anecdotes, Sarah Ferguson‘s jocular mood and Clive Christian‘s perfume insights. All served up with an exquisite Sunday lunch (better than any restaurant), prepared by the Wyatts’ French chef.

This was no ordinary Mother’s Day gathering as the guests of honor were from England. The holiday was celebrated in the United Kingdom back in March. So on this day, the focus was on the Brits — longtime family friend the Duchess of York and Lynn’s new BFFs Clive Christian and his glamorous daughter Victoria.

The duchess bounded into the Wyatt’s River Oaks home with surprising energy following her starring role in the Virtuosi of Houston gala the night before and a series of dinner parties leading up to the gala.

“Hello, Wilbur,” she buoyantly greeted Oscar, her nickname for the energy mogul derived from best-selling author Wilbur Smith‘s international adventures, which she allowed remind her of Oscar. (Oscar, who goes to his office every morning at 9, appeared to be doing well despite the effects of the stroke he suffered several years ago.)

The Wyatts and the duchess have been friends from back in the day when she and Prince Andrew were together. Fergie (as friends call her) has house-guested with the luncheon hosts in Houston and in their villa in the South of France. While she was full of playful energy, the duchess was keen on mentioning her support for the Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation, a non-profit, non-governmental entity that provides health care services in the area.

The renowned Christians (he’s OBE) were in town for several days for a special perfume presentation at Saks Fifth Avenue and were included in the round of dinners for the duchess, one hosted by Brian Teichman and Andy Cordes and another by Zarine and Meherwan Boyce. They were accompanied to the Wyatt’s intimate lunch by Saks’ Sylvia Forsythe.

Rounding out the table guests were Joyce Echols, Steve Wyatt, Shafik Rifaat and this social scribe.

As guests sipped champagne while dining on chilled asparagus soup, smoked salmon with poached egg on avocado and a divine apple tarte with creme fraiche, Clive  remarked on the striking black and white striped wall paper of the Wyatt dining room. “I wear so much black and white,” Lynn quipped, “that Karl Lagerfeld calls me Lynn Black & Wyatt.” And, let’s not forget that through decades of hosting international notables, the Wyatt’s previous home on River Oaks Boulevard came to be affectionately known as the Wyatt Hyatt.

It was Steve who brought the luncheon to sentimental tears when he gave a Mother’s Day toast to Lynn, closing with “She gave me my heart.”
