A New York Times Columnist, VIPs and the Mayor Honor Houston’s Guardians

BY // 11.16.15

What: Holocaust Museum Houston’s Guardians of the Human Spirit Luncheon.

Where: Hilton Americas.

Who: Chairs Kelli Cohen Fein and Martin Fein and Carol and Michael Goldberg; honorees Velva G. and H. Fred Levine; New York Times columnist and keynote speaker David Brooks; other VIPs spotted were Mayor Annise Parker, Eitan Levon, Arthur Schechter, Ginger Blanton, John Whitmire, Heidi and David Gerger, Sylvester Turner, Ellen Cohen, Alan Rosen, and Anna Holliday.

PC Moment: 1,100 helped in Holocaust Museum Houston‘s honoring of Velva G. and H. Fred Levine in their annual Guardians of the Human Spirit luncheon, raising $690,000 in the process. HMH created the Guardian of the Human Spirit award in 1997 to acknowledge Houstonians who have worked to improve the lives of others, however so defined. The Levines are long-time museum members (Velva is a founding board member) who’ve also founded a scholarship fund at the Ben-Gurion school in Israel. New York Times columnist and author David Brooks spoke powerfully about virtuous selflessness, the topic of his new book The Road to Character.
