Troy Aikman, a Billionaire and a TV Star Party in Houston — and it Turns into a Touchdown for TEACH

BY // 11.21.16

What: To Educate All Children (TEACH) annual Touchdown for TEACH dinner

Where: River Oaks Country Club

PC Moment: With Spencer Tilman tossing the softball questions, it was a home run for both NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman and for TEACH. The discussion was revealing and the profits were astounding — $700,000, that thanks in large party to billionaire Fayez Sarofim, who underwrote all expenses of the evening. Susan Sarofim (his wife) and Mary Yenik founded the non-profit that provides teachers in low-income schools with strategies for de-escalation and conflict resolution. A nifty $135,000 of that came from the touchdown run, a replacement for paddles up that raised the handsome sum in less than five minutes. Applause, applause. For the third consecutive year Carol and Mike Linn chaired the football-themed evening along with honorary chairs DeeDee and Wallis Marsh. The sellout crowd applauded honoree Tracy Krohn for his longtime support and Furr High School principal Bertie Simmons, whose school, supported by TEACH,  recently received a $10 million grant sponsored by Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple’s Steve Jobs.

Who: TEACH executive director Kelly Krohn, HISD superintendent Richard Carranza, Spring Branch ISD president Scott Muri, Bruce Derrick, Buzz Aldrin, Hallie Vanderhider, Laurie Krohn, Soraya and Scott McClelland, Joanne King Herring, Dan Pickering, Bill King and Trish Mallard, Leticia and Steve Trauber, and Katherine and Paul Murphy.
