Shopping Through History: Mammoth Houston Antiques Show Brings a Worldwide Reach

BY // 08.27.15

This month, it’s time to relish, celebrate and shop history: Houston Antiques + Art + Design Show sets up 100 handsome Booths Friday through Sunday, September 18 through 20, at Hall B of the George R. Brown convention Center. Formerly known as the venerable HADA show — where Miss Hogg and the Mastersons sleuthed for treasures for their respective Bayou Bend and Rienzi House collections — HAADS reflects a 21st-century tweak on the tradition of acquiring antiques. Romp through three centuries of furnishings, paintings, lighting, porcelain, crystal, rugs, books, estate jewels and more choice and rare finds for antiquarians, architects, collectors and design connoisseurs — including the alluring field of 20th-century modernism.

Hoorah for Chippendale, welcome George Nelson. Now in its third iteration, Houston Antiques + Art + Design Show is all about the room vignettes, with a trove of discerning dealers from across the United States. Included are Houston notables The Antique Company, Antiques of River Oaks, Atelier 1505, Clifton House, Golden Chances, David Lackey Antiques and Art, Majolica LLC (with a post also in France), Past Era Fine Antique Jewelry, Robert E.  Alker Fine Art and, new this year, hometown exhibitors Wayne Smith Jewels (pedigreed bijoux), The Royal Hunt (19th-century Black Forest furnishings and bronze hunting trophies) and two purveyors of modernism, Troy Osborne and Swank.

The Houston dealers serve up their covetable wares alongside exhibitors from across the pond and a select contingent from Latin America. Highlights from the international brigade include Gele Antiques, traveling from Montevideo, Uruguay, with a cache of European furnishings and paintings; Mears & Boyer of England, specializing in antique jewels; and Really Good, in from Panama with botanical prints and baskets. Also shop unique categories such as vintage designer handbags and accessories (Branded Luxury, Philadelphia), antique toys (Clarke & Farley, Merriam, Kansas) and French Art Deco silver, glass and decorative art (Iris Bleu, Atlanta).

So it goes, as one of the oldest antiques shows in America, possessing a 50-plus year pedigree, is given a fresh polish by Dolphin Promotions, the creators of prestigious shows across America, including the acclaimed Palm Springs Modernism. Once again, Dolphin partners with 1stdibs, The Magazine Antiques and PaperCity. New this year are two special panels, both PaperCity DesignLabs: The Future of the Past (the profession of antiques and the next generation of antique collectors, Saturday, 2 pm) and Design in the Middle (a look at mid-century modern, Saturday, 4:30 pm).

Ready, set, acquire! For the complete Houston Antiques + Art + Design Show lineup and advance tickets, houstonantiquesartdesign.com. Show times: Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19, 11 am to 7 pm; Sunday, September 20, 11 am to 5 pm; admission $15 (good for all three days, includes show catalog).
