Shea Serrano, Booker T, Kool A.D. and Race in Houston: Local Writer and Rapper’s Compelling New Zine Shows the Real City

BY // 05.05.17

We’re mad for ‘zines, and releases from current Lawndale artist in residence Sarah Welch to art critic/blogger Robert Boyd (creator of The Great God Pan Is Dead) are prized additions to our shelves. Now there’s a new entrée, one that reaches beyond the art world to engage issues of race in America, specifically the experiences and contributions of people of color in Houston. Found Me drops this Saturday in a limited first run of 200 copies, priced at $18.

Published with a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation’s Idea Fund, administered through DiverseWorks, Found Me is a debut effort by PaperCity assistant photo editor Matthew Ramirez  who also serves as the magazine’s music writer — and Houston rapper and DJ Anthony Obi (aka Fat Tony, whose albums have earned acclaim from Rolling Stone and Spin). The result traverses subjects from Lucille’s chef Chris Williams (interviewed by PaperCity assistant digital editor Jailyn Marcel) to artist/musician Robert Hodge, New York Times-bestselling author Shea Serrano, and WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Booker T (who’s already declared he’s running for Houston Mayor in 2019). Personal essays, collages, photography, poetry, short stories, and commissioned works by composers including the incomparable Victor “Kool A.D.” Vazquez complete the collectible ‘zine, which is art directed by Stephen Wilson (set designer for last fall’s Lawndale Live gig).

The release party for the inaugural issue will be held this Saturday, May 6, 6 to 9 pm, at hip books/zines/records boutique Wired Up – Modern Conveniences, at their Montrose HQ, 2608 Dunlavy (next to Brasil).

Featured talent making party personal appearances: Contributor songwriter Mandy Clinton croons (she pulls double duty as front woman for The Lories and has recently embarked on a solo project under the name of Pearl Crush). Performance artist Celestina Billington brings a written piece to life, while contributors graphic artist Tyler Deauvea, fiction writer Shaina Frazier, and one-half of Found Me‘s brain trust, Fat Tony, read selections from the magazine.

Found Me is available this month at Wired Up and an online store to come. Stay tuned at instagram.com/foundmemag.
