Framed: Quartet on the Town

BY Catherine D. Anspon // 02.10.15

This scribe’s past week of art adventures underscores some of the high/low diversity of Houston’s scene. At Art Car Museum, hometown artist John Atlas has been doggedly, obsessively making art for decades, and finally we get to see the output (through March 29). Don’t miss a very epic wall piece in the museum’s final gallery that emits a hypnotic pull upon the viewer like a massive spaceship.

On the international end of the spectrum, Sicardi Gallery‘s show for Latin American Carlos Cruz-Diez is a well-edited showcase for the artist’s chromatic reverberations. Also catch a rare Cruz-Diez totemic sculpture, perfectly placed on the gallery’s first-floor in alignment with the vertical slit of a window to get supercharged when the sun pours in (through March 7).

We’ve recently discovered Roberta Harris, whose work spans an incredible five decades —in our own backyard, so to speak. With 2014 works on view at G Gallery (through March 4), and an explosive retrospective at the Katy Contemporary Arts Museum (February 21 – April 19) that showcases fascinating explorations in painting, sculpture, metalwork and even furniture, this is Harris’ time. At the KCAM, watch for riotous pattern-and-decoration painting, some exquisite postmodern sculpture worthy of the Memphis movement and her latest: fiery, color-charged canvases, which she some how keeps under control, in a sexy struggle with the grid.

Finally, what could be better than a studio visit? One recent Sunday night, Patrick Turk invited me into to his spacious historic Montrose abode (a type that is fast becoming a vanishing species). It’s a testament to a Victorian investigation into collage art, filtered through a cabinet-of-curiosities vibe. Cris Worley Fine Arts is now showing his wild way with cut paper, as a guest artist in her swell new Dallas space. We can’t wait to return to Turk’s casa and photograph this nest for you.
