The Most Outrageous (and Best) Valentine’s Day Gifts Ever: A $35,000 Box of Chocolates Is Just the Opener

BY // 02.14.16

Think art-world types go for a prosaic bouquet or a box of Godivas? Think again.

Only over-the-top paintings, sculpture, photography or an installation will do.

Here are our Top Ten gifts that collectors and curators would love to receive on Valentine’s Day, complete with a price guide. Shop away! Note: A big pocket is not always required, but it can be helpful. Also important, a love for Pop art, abstract painting and — bugs.

1). Commission Smithsonian-exhibited artist Jennifer Angus to decorate your room with a wall of insects, in a buggy ode to the Victorian’s obsession with etymology. From $800, through Esperson Gallery at GreenStreet, Houston.

2). Acquire an abstract canvas in a sweet pink-and-white palette by Houston’s David Aylsworth, from leading-edge dealer Inman Gallery, Houston. Painting shown, Strummed Ukeleles, 2015, $5,000, one of the few still available from the former MFAH Core Fellow’s show, on view at Inman through February 20.

3). Dallas dynamic art duo, photographers Kasumi Chow and Desiree Espada, collaborate on some very smart image-making, as served up in their FotoFest-exhibited series, “Truly, Madly.” As you’re reading this, the pair and their gallery, The Public Trust, Dallas, are releasing a special, limited-edition of the 12-piece portfolio, which comes in a boxed set for an amazing $600.

4). Dallas talent Celia Eberle has a cult following in proportion to her brilliant mastery of all sorts of strange, unorthodox media. For her current show at Cris Worley Fine Arts, Dallas, Eberle mixed up elixirs of love in hand-crafted perfume bottles. Four scents available, bottles $100 each, $350 set of four.

5). If you’ve voting for Bernie Sanders, you’re probably not in the market for a Jeff Koons multi-million dollar heart sculpture. But we couldn’t resist.

6). What Pop collector wouldn’t want this exuberant box of chocolates? The price for this lively sculpture? A tidy 35K, which looks like a deal compared to a Koons. Through Unix Gallery, Houston.

7). A rose-hued Rufino Tamayo still-life canvas bears the beauty and culture of Mexico. On the block, Wednesday, May 18, at Dallas Auction Gallery, estimate $600,000 to $800,000.

8). Cologne-based Fulbright Scholar Thomas Zitzwitz’s acrylic on canvas hums with futuristic energy and an understated Valentine’s palette. At Gremillion & Co. Fine Art, Houston, $22,500.

9). Argentine-born, Houston-based lensman Pablo Gimenez Zapiola is a wizard with light. His images, like this abstract creation conjuring a heart, emit complexity and poetry. Through the artist, $400 (12 x 12 inches) to $1,100 (24 x 24 inches), in editions of 10.

10). Charismatic European artist Nall deconstructs the trope of the rose. Is this outrageous sculptural watercolor a metaphor for love gone bad? At Octavia Art Gallery, Houston, $90,000.
