“Peter Pan 360” Soars to *New Heights at Threesixty Theatre

BY // 08.26.15

The boy who never grew up is seeing quite a resurgence lately. On Broadway, Finding Neverland (based on the Johnny Depp film of the same name) melodically explores author J.M. Barry’s inspiration for Peter Pan, while a cinematic prequel, Pan (starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard), hits the big screen in October — all on the heels of NBC-TV airing a live production of the beloved 1954 musical last December.

Perhaps an influx of fairy dust is to blame for this Pan-demic. Whatever the case, Houston audiences are about to experience Neverland as never before. This brand-new incarnation, Peter Pan 360, is an immersive theatrical experience staged at Threesixty Theatre (otherwise known as the enormous white tent pitched just off the Southwest Freeway near the 610 loop). Theater-in-the-round combines with overhead surround CGI projection for a production that sends actors soaring 40 feet above the audience’s heads — across miles of virtual London and beyond. All your favorite characters are here, from Wendy and Hook to the Lost Boys, in a production that premiered in London’s Kensington Gardens and has winged its way to its Houston premiere in partnership with the Society for the Performing Arts and the Houston Chronicle.

Still having trouble believing? Then consider these statistics: 10 million pixels, 15,000 square feet of CGI, 400 square miles of virtual London and the largest CGI venue in the world. Peter Pan 360 is directed by Thom Southerland, who co-adapted Barrie’s revered story with Tanya Ronder. Production design is by seven-time Olivier Award winner William Dudley. Music for this all-new production was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch and Howard Herrick.
