Sawyer Yards Makes Christmas Shopping Artistic: This Holiday Stroll Offers an Antidote to Big Box Boringness

BY // 11.27.18

Get ready to gift an artful holiday spread this season. Already home to the sprawling biannual Spring and Fall Art Strolls, the eclectic Houston institution Sawyer Yards is gearing up for its first-ever Celebrate! Holiday Art Stroll.

A two-day shop-a-thon, the Holiday Art Stroll goes down this Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1. It’s a chance to grab one-of-a-kind works for your closest friends and family members (or even yourself) and avoid the prosaic uniformity of gifts acquired from a big-box store.

The Celebrate! Holiday Art Stroll is distinct from Sawyer Yards’ other art bashes in its two-day duration, and also how the epic 55-acre artistic community – one of the largest of its kind in the country – divvies up direct access to its studios.

Instead of a one-day free-for-all, Friday, November 30, sees the artists of Spring Street Studios and Sabine Street Studios of the North Yard kicking the weekend off from 5 to 9 pm. That night promises open studios and enticing acquisition opportunities, across all media.

The next day, Saturday, December 1, also from 5 to 9 pm, the action goes down at the Main Yard, as the talents from Silver Street Studios, The Silos at Sawyer Yards, and Winter Street Studios all hold court.

Some 350 artists and artisans will showcase their wares during the Holiday Art Stroll, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, mosaic work, photography, and jewelry.

As always, the chief draw of the Sawyer Yards Art Stroll is the opportunity to meet the creatives whose work is up for purchase. Not only to shake hands and say hello, but to see these artists at work in their studios, observe their process, and find them “at home” with their creations.

Of course, the opportunity to take home a canvas or object to gift, or for your own collection, is the end-game of the experience.

Supporting the Holiday Art Stroll is a chance to pass along a fascinating story about meeting an artist, finding yourself inspired by their studio and work, and buying from them firsthand – a truly unique holiday tradition that cannot be matched by a gift card.

No matter your style, price range, or buying power, you can be assured there are beautiful and meaningful discoveries to be had from Sawyer Yards artists.

Several individual buildings in the campus will host fundraisers as well; Sabine Street Studios will donate a portion of sales to three charities, including Friends of Down Syndrome, The Periwinkle Foundation, and Houston SPCA.
